CON U SUNDAY, BISHOPS WRITE UP

The 2011 QSSF regular season got of to an audible ‘bang’ as the McGill Redmen are now 2-0 heading into their first test agaist cross-town rivals, Concordia, this Sunday, 1pm at Molson Stadium.

On September 9th, the Redmen travelled to Lennoxville to take on the Bishop’s Gaiters in the latest installment of a classic Quebec league rivalry. This was the first game played with our full XV as key players were absent on our pre-season tour due to other school related commitments.

There was fantastic back and forth play between the sides to open the match, with the Purple and White ahead 10-7 within the first half hour of the game. Young Centre, Quentin Prader had a solid first start despite his comedic and chameleon-like linguistical interaction with the team on the bus rides. Somewhere between a refined diplomatic French accents mixed with the WASP-y English tongue he developed at boarding school topped off with some California bro makes for a very interesting conversation that can morphologically fascinating.

The game was broken open after consecutive tries from Connor McKenzie and Josh Blair. Blair, who came off an enthralling summer of studying Soviet-era architecture with the Canadian National U20 Rugby team in the small and borsch-loving nation of Georgia. He came back with the fantastical notion that, “TRY SCORE YOU!”

McGill’s defense held despite the best efforts of the Gaiter’s and their rapturous fans whose creative chants and incantations brought a creative tear to the eye of this belletriste. Nevertheless, the Redmen held true and the boot of Gideon Balloch was able to navigate this band of rapscallions to more hospitable waters. The Mighty Red came away with a 26-10 victory. Amid the celebrations, old high school flames and sweet hearts were in clamoring for the eye of incredibly well coiffed rookie “Skywalker.” Sidenote: Do not leave you phone on the bus with a text from your girlfriend open – it usually ends in tears (personal experience).

First, a big congratulatory slap on the back to our Front Row! Personally, I don’t think we really need a reason to celebrate these big, lovable oafs in their thick-necked glory?

Well done for the opening game, Gents!
